Children have a way of seeing the truth that we adults often cannot see. They express that truth with passion and conviction. The 12 year old seventh grade student had been warned that her topic was controversial and would cause her to be disqualified from contention, but she chose to carry on nonetheless. Her words were so powerful and presence so charismatic that the one judge who took offense stepped down, for even she knew that this young woman must be declared the winner.
If I'm ever blessed to raise a child, I pray that he or she will be bold enough to take a stand for what they believe, whether popular or not. These parents ought to be proud. May this young woman never "grow up."
This video shows her practicing for the speech. I don't know about you, but I needed tissues.
