Sarah Palin & I Want to Know: Why is "Drill, Baby, Drill" Okay for Brazil but not US?

Wednesday, August 19, 2009

I have felt a bit out of the loop since being down in Long Island. I hate to disappoint you all, but I don't come from a family of people who sit around watching "fair and balanced" Fox News. So I have a few things to catch up on now that I'm back.

One thing I heard in passing, however, was that the United States will be financing drilling in Brazil. It was a quick "hear," and my first thought at that point was, How is it that we are able to help pay for another country's drilling when Washington seems intent on keeping us from doing the same thing here at home?

Followed by that thought was this one: Sarah Palin will have something to say about this!

She did not disappoint.

Read what she wrote on got it...Facebook page. And after reading it, answer this for me: "Is there anyone else making more sense than she is right now?" As Fox News says, so say I: "We report; you decide."

Today's Wall Street Journal contains some puzzling news for all Americans who are impacted by high energy prices and who share the goal of moving us toward energy independence.

For years, states rich with an abundance of oil and natural gas have been begging Washington, DC politicians for the right to develop their own natural resources on federal lands and off shore. Such development would mean good paying jobs here in the United States (with health benefits) and the resulting royalties and taxes would provide money for federal coffers that would potentially off-set the need for higher income taxes, reduce the federal debt and deficits, or even help fund a trillion dollar health care plan if one were so inclined to support such a plan.

So why is it that during these tough times, when we have great needs at home, the Obama White House is prepared to send more than two billion of your hard-earned tax dollars to Brazil so that the nation's state-owned oil company, Petrobras, can drill off shore and create jobs developing its own resources? That's all Americans want; but such rational energy development has been continually thwarted by rabid environmentalists, faceless bureaucrats and a seemingly endless parade of lawsuits aimed at shutting down new energy projects.

I'll speak for the talent I have personally witnessed on the oil fields in Alaska when I say no other country in the world has a stronger workforce than America, no other country in the world has better safety standards than America, and no other country in the world has stricter environmental standards than America. Come to Alaska to witness how oil and gas can be developed simultaneously with the preservation of our eco-system. America has the resources. We deserve the opportunity to develop our resources no less than the Brazilians. Millions of Americans know it is true: "Drill, baby, drill." Alaska is proof you can drill and develop, and preserve nature, with its magnificent caribou herds passing by the Trans Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS), completely unaffected. One has to wonder if Obama is playing politics and perhaps refusing a "win" for some states just to play to the left with our money.

The new Gulf of Mexico lease sales tomorrow sound promising and perhaps will move some states in the right direction, but we all know that the extreme environmentalists who serve to block progress elsewhere, including in Alaska, continue to block opportunities. These environmentalists are putting our nation in peril and forcing us to rely on unstable and hostile foreign countries. Mr. Obama can stop the extreme tactics and exert proper government authority to encourage resource development and create jobs and health benefits in the U.S.; instead, he chooses to use American dollars in Brazil that will help to pay the salaries and benefits for Brazilians to drill for resources when the need and desire is great in America.

Buy American is a wonderful slogan, but you can't say in one breath that you want to strengthen our economy and stimulate it, and then in another ship our much-needed dollars to a nation desperate to drill while depriving us of the same opportunity.

- Sarah Palin

This article may shed a little more light on why this decision was made:

A thinker a reader August 21, 2009 at 6:27 AM

We need to think in terms of long term national security. To keep the United States strong, secure, and powerful we need lots of natural resources. By using resources of the rest of the world and conserving our own we will still have oil after everyone else has run out. Then we can and will drill while the rest of the world must do without oil we will still have it. Russia foolishly sells its oil and gas and will eventually run out making it an even weaker state, we meanwhile will be sitting pretty and reaping the benefits. Isn't it better to keep a strategic resource American, by not shortsightedly using it, so that America will be strong long into the future? Drill baby not now not here not yet... Let America's future be strong!

In reply to thinker reader. I understand your desire to horde our resources, but one thing I think you fail to understand, our government cant manage their way out of a paper bag. I really dont think you understand the resources we have are in great abundance. There is no shortage. The fluctuating prices for oil are fixed by the same crooks that brought us the whole global warming scam. We need to exploit our resources in a responsible way, and drive the arabs out of business. They have had us by the short hairs for way too long!

Global warming isn't a scam...

If Palin is your future, you have none. She doesn't know what she's talking about. The U.S. Export Import Bank is NOT financed with tax dollars and its INVESTMENT: 1) will be repaid and 2.) is made on the condition that it be used to buy equipment, consulting, etc for the US. This is a plus for US business. Your ill-informed leader is ignorant and if she is your source of national and world news – so are you.

This lady is a absolute joke. Common sense goes a long way have you just sit and listened to this lady??????????

As Barney Frank would say, what world do you live in? You need to inform yourself instead of hanging onto the words of Sarah Palin who is once again exhibiting her absolute and inexorable ignorance.

Here are the facts:

Facts About the Proposed Ex-Im Bank Loans for Petrobras' Brazilian Offshore Oil Exploration and Development

Background on Ex-Im Bank:

The Export-Import Bank of the United States’ (Ex-Im Bank) mission is to help create and sustain jobs for American workers. The Bank does this at no cost to the American taxpayer; in the past sixteen years the Bank has netted the American people $4.9 billion and the jobs those exports have supported.
More than 80% of Bank authorizations during the last fiscal year directly benefited small businesses.
Charges and facts:

Charge: The U.S. government is giving away more than $2 billion in taxpayer dollars to Brazil’s largest oil and gas company to drill for oil in Brazil.

Fact: The Bank has approved a preliminary commitment to lend up to $2 billion to Petrobras for the purchase of American-made goods and services. The funds will go to American exporters as payment for their sales to the company. Of note, the Bank is self-sustaining and no taxpayer dollars are involved.

Charge: The loans to Petrobras represent a giveaway of U.S. tax dollars.

Fact: The Bank’s activities do not cost the American taxpayer a dime. In fact, since 1992 the American people netted more than $4.9 billion and the jobs those exports created.

Charge: America is exporting jobs to Brazil as a result of the loans.

Fact: Only American made goods and services qualify for Ex-Im Bank loans or guarantees. This is the government doing what it's supposed to do - helping to create U.S. jobs, making sure that Americans get a fair shot at selling goods and services, and helping American workers compete on a level playing field against foreign competition.

Charge: The loan to Petrobras represents a reversal of the Obama Administration’s policies on off-shore drilling.

Fact: The Bank’s bipartisan Board unanimously approved the preliminary commitment to Petrobras on April 14, 2009, before any Obama appointees joined the Bank. In fact, at the time the Bank’s Board consisted of three Republicans and two Democrats, all of whom were appointed by George W. Bush.

It's too bad Sarah doesn't find a useful way to use her popularity. This behavior of hers to me is just one more sign of her total lack of leadership skills.

Can she Brazil from Alaska?

It is very typical for all politicians to use sound bites to better their positions. Unfortunately these usually do not really tell the entire story. I like Sarah Palin, but she is no different than Obama, Bush or any of the rest. None of them seem to follow the old adage that "the truth will set you free". Their motto seems to be " Half truth will get you elected".

Response to a thinker, a reader:

Are you serious! YOU ARE AN IDIOT
No one is going to RUN OUT of oil, and while everyone else is hoarding the cash...Americans are losing their jobs and the country is going broke. WAKE THE HELL UP PEOPLE!!!

You are a classic example of what is wrong with America - nut case religious zealots (like you) belong in foreign countries like the Middle East, not the United States of America.

We all see how ridiculous these other countries act and behave with religious fanatics running them . . . and that is what you want to bring to the US?

You are a lost soul and a threat to our great society as we know it.

To the LEFT WING LIBERAL, who thinks he is smarter than the rest of us::::

The Export-Import Bank of the United States (Ex-Im Bank) is the official export credit agency of the United States federal government.

So, what part of that does not say TAX PAYER DOLLARS..dont try and explain how the bank is functional, and self sustaining that is bull, it is our tax payer money that create4d this entity, aand sustains it!!!

Madam President,
When elected what will you do with the Federal Reserve? Why will the Liberal Congress not allow an audit? Is all of our gold in Fort Knox gone? Why do we have to be members of GATT, NAFTA and all that "World" stuff IMF, BIS? When will we put America first?

This comment is for the person above who only attacked on the basis of Christianity. Is your hatred so intense that you cannot argue the issue, but only attack someone's faith? What part of this article was about my faith? Your true agenda is showing. It's consuming you--and you need to get a hold of it. It's keeping you from being able to discuss the issue. Help needed--for you, and help is available.

This is the most ridiculous site I've seen in a while. Thanks.

I am attempting to discern what it is that Sarah Palin has said or done or promoted that is something that Christ would... Palin has promoted wolf hunting and rewarding hunters who present the AK gov't with forepaws of their dead wolves and pups with cash; Palin has admittedly stolen [or, as she said borrowed, clothes from McCain Campaign until they noticed and asked for it back; money from the state for her family personal use and paid it back after AK found out...]; Palin has alerted people of non-existent death panels... ummm, where are Christs teachings in any of this? Oh - and comparing her single mother daughter to anyone elses is... lets see, other than the biological fate of daughter giving birth and legal status of being unmarried, I think that single mother and her child have necessities and advantages that most single mothers could only dream of for their children, if they have any dreams left... Sorry Sarah Palin. As an American and Christian and single mother [to prevent any assumptions, my children are grown and college graduates and all without government or family assistance, though I do know it should be available if needed]... and so many other reasons, for ethical, logical and spiritual reasons, I could never support you as a leader.
