Rock Solid Church Brings Founding Fathers & Soldiers to Flag Day Parade; (Updated with our Parade Theme Song)

Monday, June 14, 2010

On Saturday, my city had its Flag Day Parade. It's one of those annual celebrations that my church, Rock Solid, throws everything into. God has blessed us with the most talented people who use that talent to glorify God and honor our nation. Every year since I can remember, we've won the trophy for Most Patriotic Float. We used to also win Best Overall Float, but they stopped selecting the best float. Our guess is that it was unfair to keep awarding us both! :)

Usually my pastor's wife, Ms. Brenda, gets the vision of what she wants to do for the float. Then John makes it happen. He is an amazing artist, and there's nothing he cannot create.

We always have an incredible amount of participants from church in the parade. From men in the patriotic scenes, to people holding flags and banners, to both teenagers and adults walking and handing out Bibles and tracts, to teens on skateboards and scooters doing the same, it's an incredible opportunity to parade Jesus outside the four walls of the church and to display our love for the greatest country on the face of the earth. We carried banners with quotes from the Founding Fathers, banners with the Ten Commandments, and a plethora of American flags. It was with pride that I carried one of those flags, and I also got to hang out with George Washington. (Find me in the last three pictures!)

Over the years, it has always been humbling to see people lining the streets applauding and some weeping as we go by. In fact, there are people who are a part of our church family now who came as a result of what they saw and felt at past parades on Flag Day. Yes, God can use Flag Day to draw people to Himself, which is exactly the heart that our church has toward this wonderful occasion every year.

Clearly, we stand strong on the fact that this nation was founded on Biblical principles, and we will not be duped and silenced by the lie that God must be eliminated from the fabric of this country. Nope...not buying it. In fact, in the pictures below you will see us carrying a banner on which George Washington is quoted as saying, "Don't let anyone claim to be a true American if they ever attempt to remove religion from politics." You saw it coming, didn't you, George Washington?

Rock Solid won Most Patriotic again this year. The vision for the float was as follows: show where America has come from, how we got the freedom we enjoy now, and what it takes to maintain it. In the pictures, you will see the Revolutionary soldiers under a somewhat rustic-looking American Revolution flag. The flag waves around to a scene of the Founding Fathers and the signing of the Constitution. The flag then emerges on the other side, changed now to our current flag, and hovers over modern soldiers who are still fighting so that we may maintain that freedom fought for and won so long ago. Our guys look good in uniform too!

Enjoy the pictures below. The first few show everyone as they were getting ready for the parade and practicing before we stepped off. Then you'll see pictures as we marched down the street.

UPDATE: Here's the song we marched to in the parade: "In God We Still Trust" by Diamond Rio. It went perfectly with our float and our message.
