As many of you know, I am a 7th grade English teacher in New York. School ended on June 24th, not a moment too soon. I was in serious need of a vacation, so on June 25th--bright and early in the morning--I hit the road for a long drive to Missouri to visit my friend and prayer partner, Kristi. It took about 19 hours total, and I loved just about every moment of it. I have been here now for over two weeks, and again, I have loved every moment of it!
On Friday, Kristi took me to Lambert's, Home of the Throwed Rolls. Have you ever heard of it? Have you ever eaten there? I don't blog a lot about food (LOL!), but this is worth a blog. Not only is the food incredible; the whole experience is a blast. They actually throw their rolls to you. Thus the motto Home of the Throwed Rolls! The history behind this is that in 1976, Lambert's was so crowded the server could not get to a guest. (Yes, they use the term "guest," not "customer.") The guest then said, "Just throw the ... roll!" The tradition started from there. You have to be somewhat of an athlete to eat there. At the very least, you need good hand-eye coordination! If you want a hot roll, you have two options: 1) You stand up and get a server's attention by waving, and he'll toss it from way across the room, or 2) When they walk around calling, "Hot rolls!" you respond with a wave, and it'll come flying at ya! And these have got to be the best rolls I've ever eaten! They also come around with sorghum molasses and apple butter to put on your rolls, but I liked mine just fine with nothing at all on them.
Not only is the food you order plenteous, but Lambert's also has what they call "pass-arounds." This is food that they carry around in a big bowl announcing it, and then they pile it on your plate if you want it. Some pass-arounds they offer are black eyed peas, fried potatoes, macaroni and tomatoes, and fried okra. I'm talkin' a heap of food for which guests pay nothing extra.
What an experience! I am so grateful Kristi took me there, and the food and service were so wonderful I just wanted to give Lambert's a hearty MotivationTruth shout-out. They earned it.
Check out www.throwedrolls.com on the web, and if you're ever in Sikeston or Ozark, MO or Foley, AL, stop in for some great food and an even greater time. They'll greet ya with their red suspenders, jeans, and bow ties--and they'll treat ya real good!
