Breitbart News: Wisconsin Conservatives Urge Governor Walker to Reject Common Core

As an educator who has taught under the mandates of the Common Core, I am glad to see more and more people becoming engaged in what these standards are all about, the damage this so-called education reform is doing to children, and the politics behind it all. They're speaking up and fighting back.

Wisconsin conservative leaders are doing some fighting of their own. They are urging Gov. Scott Walker to put feet to his previous words and reject Common Core, which I have coined Common Cor(PS)e. Via Breitbart News, Dr. Susan Berry reports:

Tea party and conservative leaders from across Wisconsin have sent Gov. Scott Walker (R) an open letter urging him to reject the Common Core State Standards.

In the letter, dated November 26th, the 61 leaders ask Walker to lead a repeal of the Common Core standards in Wisconsin and abide by the same words he himself wrote in a recent Wall Street Journal editorial:
Too many people in politics today spend their time trying not to lose instead of trying to do the right thing. They would better serve the country by worrying more about the next generation than the next election. The irony is that politicians who spend more time worrying about the next generation than about the next election often tend to win the next election – because voters are starved for leadership.
In September, Walker joined other Republican governors who were beginning to reconsider their states’ participation in the Common Core testing consortia. Wisconsin, in fact, was one of the first states to adopt Common Core in 2010 under State Superintendent Tony Evers.

However, when critics began to articulate concerns about the merits of the standards, the vast amount of student data collection involved in their implementation, and the realization that the federal government was more invested in Common Core than was originally believed, Walker decided that Wisconsin could do better.

“I’d like to have Wisconsin have its own unique standards that I think can be higher than what’s been established and what’s been talked about at the national level,” the governor said.

According to Fox News, though, Walker has not yet committed to specific improvements in his state’s education standards, nor has he announced his intention to rescind Common Core in Wisconsin.

The letter calls upon Walker to “rise to the opportunity” to lead on the issue by urging the state legislature to pass a bill that repeals the Common Core.

Thanksgiving Anew

Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to reflect on all the reasons for which to be grateful. As I was praying this morning, I was overwhelmed with the presence of God and how good He is. Words cannot do justice to how blessed I am and how thankful I am for each of these blessings. Just knowing Jesus as my Lord and Savior is reason enough to rejoice. Everything else is just icing on the cake--or ice cream on the sweet potato pie! I pray that your day is filled with the same reality and awareness.

Thanksgiving is different this year, as I'm spending it in a new state in a whole new chapter of my life. I miss my family, and I look forward to going home for Christmas, but I am also very much thrilled, in this exciting time of my life, to be with friends who are just like family.

Happy Thanksgiving, and may its joy remain with you every day.

Thanksgiving offers us invaluable time to spend with our family and reflect on our many blessings. In 1789, George Washington declared a day of national Thanksgiving for our new country to render unto God our "sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection."

But even before that first proclamation from a new nation, pioneers across America celebrated Thanksgiving as a time to give praise to God for full harvests and Divine Providence.

And indeed, America has been richly blessed. From coast to coast, we enjoy an abundance of natural resources, plentiful harvests, beautiful cities and our most precious gift of all—a people who value liberty and continue to stand as an example to the world of all that can be accomplished by a free and hard-working people.

This Thanksgiving, join me in a moment of prayer to give thanks for the thousands of American men and women in our armed forces who will spend Thanksgiving away from their homes and families, facing danger overseas to protect our way of life.

When we sit down to enjoy a family meal on Thursday, I will give thanks to God for the blessing of a strong and diverse family life that has taught me so much about loyalty, selflessness, and compassion. I will pray for God's continued blessings on my family, and on yours, and on this great nation of ours.

50th Anniversary of President John F. Kennedy's Assassination

The nation pauses today to remember President John F. Kennedy on this 50th anniversary of his assassination. No matter what side of the political aisle one sits, let us take at least a moment to honor one of our country's leaders who was taken from us much too soon.

Governor Palin paid tribute to President Kennedy in this beautiful tribute she penned on Facebook:
President John F. Kennedy was remembered and honored today in Dallas. A memorial plaque was unveiled at Dealey Plaza, inscribed with a beautiful quote that I discuss in my book “Good Tidings and Great Joy.” I also used the quote in my Southeastern University speech and would like to share the excerpt from “Good Tidings and Great Joy” (pgs. 130-132):

….During my speech, I recited one of my favorite quotes to the students, faculty, and Southeastern supporters: “We in this country, in this generation, are—by destiny rather than choice—the watchmen on the walls of world freedom. We ask, therefore, that we may be worthy of our power and responsibility, that we may exercise our strength with wisdom and restraint, and that we may achieve in our time and for all time the ancient vision of ‘peace on earth, goodwill toward men.’ That must always be our goal, and the righteousness of our cause must always underlie our strength. For as was written long ago: ‘except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.’”

The source of this quote? Which right-wing pundit called America the “watchman on the walls” for the world? What radical televangelist just had to add a Bible verse in there for good measure?

The answer might surprise you. The above quote would be ridiculously polarizing in today’s ├╝ber-partisan culture— if a Republican leader uttered it, I could easily imagine the “talking heads” on television immediately dissecting it:

“What does it mean our country is a nation ‘of destiny’?”

“How patronizing to call ourselves the ‘watchmen’ of the world.”

“Since when did America begin to have the market on ‘righteousness’?”

“So now the whole country has to be kept by ‘the Lord’? Whose Lord?”

What my audience may not have known is that the above words are excerpted from a speech John F. Kennedy was scheduled to deliver on November 22, 1963. Tragically, he never got to the podium that day, because he was assassinated in Dallas en route in his motorcade. Years later, his prepared remarks were released to the public, and we were finally able to see the significant message he intended to deliver that fateful day.

I especially love JFK’s quote from Psalm 127: “Except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.”

Kennedy was going to invoke God’s protection on our country so that we might live up to our responsibility in the world….

Today, as we remember JFK, may we renew our commitment to live up to our responsibility as the abiding beacon of liberty in a troubled world. May we keep faith with all of those who, like President Kennedy, gave their lives in service to our country. And may the Lord always bless and protect America.

(P.S. The great author C.S. Lewis also died on that same day 50 years ago. I’ll write more about my admiration for him, which I also noted in “Good Tidings and Great Joy,” tomorrow from here in Minnesota.)

Today is the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address. Abraham Lincoln delivered these powerful words on November 19, 1863:

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate -- we can not consecrate -- we can not hallow -- this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

Governor Palin acknowledged the anniversary with this Facebook post:
Today is the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s delivery of the Gettysburg Address. Lincoln’s words helped heal our wounded nation. Lincoln predicted, “that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom,” and he was right. The trajectory of the war and the nation itself course-corrected back to the republic our founding documents envisioned – a nation “conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”

We are still that nation! Thank you sincerely to the beautiful people we’ve met on this book tour so far. They embody all the best of this great republic “of the people, by the people, for the people.”

We’d especially like to thank the gracious people of Plano, Texas, who came out today and were so understanding about today’s abbreviated event. Also, thank you to the helpful and kind employees at Costco.

Governor Palin Starts Book Tour With a Flurry of Interviews

Governor Palin has been very busy now that her book tour has kicked off. Could there be a better place to start a book signing tour for Good Tidings and Great Joy: Protecting the Heart of Christmas than Bethlehem? Yesterday's kickoff began there--in Bethlehem, PA, that is.

As some of you know--and others are just learning--I resigned from teaching a couple weeks ago and have embarked on a new journey. As part of my new life, I have left New York State and relocated to Missouri. I first announced my decision to move on from teaching on Facebook and then reposted that status here. I wrote:

Through much praying, seeking God, and listening to the counsel of my pastors and other godly people in my life, I run forward in faith. It's time. This is my 18th year teaching, and today I submitted my letter of resignation from my career as a teacher, effective the end of next month. This is a God-thing, a defining moment, and yes, a big leap of faith. Good thing my God is a BIG God! #TeacherStories

Governor Palin gets set for her book tour. Via Facebook:

We are looking forward to kicking off our “Good Tidings and Great Joy” book tour in “Christmas City, USA” – Bethlehem, PA – this coming Tuesday, November 12. This beautiful town was founded by Christian missionaries on Christmas Eve in 1741. Their famous Christmas Star, first lit during the Great Depression, still burns bright year round in this American town which embraces the spirit of Christmas not only on December 25, but all year. And let us not forget the importance of this region to our independence. It was not far from here on the banks of the Delaware River that General George Washington led his troops to an important victory crossing the river on December 26, 1776. We look forward to visiting this beautiful town and hope to see you there.

Governor Palin: Looking Forward to Iowa This Weekend

I'm looking forward to being back in Iowa this weekend! Tonight we'll visit with supporters of Iowa's "Puppy Jake Foundation" and highlight the great work they do to support our returning service men and women in a creative way. This group trains dogs for eventual adoption by those who have fought so hard for our freedom and suffer from ailments, including PTSD, upon their return. Having spent some time with Puppy Jake himself (see photo from the 2011 Iowa State Fair with trainer Becky Beach and her dog), I can attest to the warmth, companionship, and smiles these dogs bring. The Foundation's mission explains that the hard efforts to train these beautiful service dogs pale in comparison to the cost paid by members of our U.S. Armed Services who've given enormously for our freedom. Franklin Graham, the Governor took the stage to pay tribute to the guest of honor, discuss the impact his ministry has had on her own life, and speak of the need for another Great Awakening in this country:

Today is Rev. Billy Graham's 95th birthday. A man who has dedicated his life to sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ deserves to be honored at such a milestone--and he was. Governor Palin was among those invited to share in this birthday celebration in North Carolina today. She has spoken before of Rev. Graham's role in leading her mom to Christ, which, of course, impacted her own walk with the Lord.

What an inspiring night of celebration for a man who has given so much to so many! Be sure to tune into FOX News tonight at 10pm ET to witness a presentation of the most important news any of us will ever hear. It's “My Hope America” with Billy Graham. Governor Palin Announces First Leg of Book Tour

Governor Palin's book is set to hit the stores next Tuesday, and she's set to take off on another book tour!

On Facebook, she announces:

Looking forward to heading out on the first leg of our "Good Tidings and Great Joy" book tour! I wanted to share with you some of the pre-Thanksgiving schedule and details. (More to come!) We look forward to seeing you on the road, having the opportunity to spread the positive message of this book and really share in the true spirit of theChristmas season. I'm looking forward to Governor Palin's new book. After enjoying Going Rogue and America By Heart, I am sure Good Tidings and Great Joy will be just as good. Actually, I expect to enjoy it even more. As a Christian, I have great respect for the subject matter. I am grateful for people like Governor Palin who are unashamed, unafraid, and unapologetic about the Christ of Christmas.

Taking a stand for Christianity, Governor Palin posted the following on Facebook today:

The politically correct now consider it "Un-American" to protest relegating Christian faith & diversity to the back-burner! Are you ready to stand for faith and freedom, America?! More on this topic to come as I'm looking forward to speaking to the Faith & Freedom Coalition in Iowa this Saturday and launching the tour for my new book coming out next week! It's time to STAND UP, America, and declare good tidings & great joy! It's to our nation's detriment if we shy away from this battle & let the PC police win!

Pastor Saeed in Dire Situation

Pastor Saeed needs intervention. Please do what you can to help. At the very least, please pray!

Bristol Palin covered the new developments on her blog yesterday. She wrote:

I’ve written about this many times, but it’s never been more dire.

Pastor Saeed, a U.S. Citizen, is in danger of being murdered. According to the ACLJ website, he has been transferred to a deadly cell block in one of Iran’s most dangerous and obscure prisons.
He is no longer sharing a cell with political prisoners but with murderers. Rajai Shahr Prison is where prisoners are sent to disappear – many are murdered at the hands of other prisoners.

President Obama, who has already spoken to the President of Iran about Pastor Saeed, must take immediate diplomatic action to save Saeed’s life. Time is of the essence.

Sign the petition today to urge the President and the State Department to immediately bring him home, before it’s too late.
A U.S. Citizen’s life hangs in the balance! Please act.
